Key contenders for the 2019 U.S Open

The 139th edition of the US Open is taking place later this month, which is the fourth and final Grand slam of the season. This will again be taking place on the outdoor hard courts at the famous USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in New York City. Here we cover the leading contenders for the Men’s and Women’s tournaments as Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka head in as the defending champions.

MENS

Punters have already began looking at the review of 22bet for the best offers available for the event as Novak Djokovic starts as the strong favourite and defending champion. He heads in as the player to beat again following his recent victory at Wimbledon. This followed him reaching the semi-finals at the French Open and him landing the Australian Open at the start of the season. He was also an impressive winner of the 2018 edition of the tournament, so is clearly the player to beat later this month.

Rafael Nadal looks to be his main danger, as the 33 year old appears to have returned to some of his best form. He again picked up the French Open title earlier this season and also reached the semi-final stages of Wimbledon. The world number two is also a three time US Open champion, so will be hopeful of another victory this time around.

Swiss legend Roger Federer must also enter the picture following his remarkable performance in Wimbledon. He came so close to victory before the defeat to Djokovic in the final, so will now be hopeful of further success in New York. He is a five time US Open champion, with his last victory coming back in 2008.

WOMENS

It is a much more open picture on the Women’s side as Serena Williams starts as the favourite. She is the greatest player in the history of the sport, so this will come as no surprise. She is entering the tournament following reaching the Wimbledon final, so will be hopeful of a positive showing. Williams is a six time US Open champion, with her last victory coming back in 2014.

Simona Halep must also start amongst the favourites, following her incredible Wimbledon victory recently. This saw her post a hugely dominating final performance over the previously mentioned Serena Williams. This was the 27 year old’s second Grand Slam title and she will be hopeful this will be the start of many. Her previous best finish at the US Open was reaching the semi-finals back in 2015.

The final name has to be the defending champion Naomi Osaka. The 21 year old looks to be one of the rising forces of the Women’s game, having already picked up two Grand slams including the Australian Open earlier this season. She enters the tournament having only reached the third round at both the French Open and Wimbledon. However, she appears to be much better on this surface and will be hopeful of a positive title defence.
